Anti-revisionist law enforced for the very first time

Anti-Holocaust denial legislation, passed by the Belgian parliament in March 1995, has been successfully enforced by the Brussels court of justice. On 7 November, far-right activist David Vercruysse, was handed a six months suspended sentence, fined £650 and ordered to publish the complete text of his conviction in two national newspapers.

Vercruysse was convicted for distributing the August 1997 edition of Final Conflict, the magazine of the fascist International Third Position in Britain, containing a revisionist article. The court¹s verdict was that this was a clear violation of Belgian laws prohibiting any form of denial, minimalisation, justification or approval of the Nazi genocide.

The owner of the Brussels bookshop where Final Conflict was on sale was also charged but walked free, his entire stock of Final Conflict confiscated. Though he was not convicted, the judge criticised him for selling revisionist publications. Vercruysse, who failed show up in court on 7 November, has been active in various Belgian New Right and other far-right extremist groups. In recent years, he has been part of the editorial board of the nazi Europe Nouvelle magazine.

RESISTANCES: THE ENGLISH PAGES
Concerned with the progress of right-wing extremism and the adoption of neo-fascist ideas by mainstream politics in Belgium and all over the world the anti-fascist magazine RésistanceS saw the light of day in may 1997 after several months of preparatory work.

RésistanceS wishes to make a practical contribution to the fight against fascism, racism, xenofobia, extreme nationalism and the paralysing "pensée unique". RésistanceS is fully independent and is not linked to any political organisation whatsoever.

RésistanceS is put together by a team of volunteers with different ethnical and socio-cultural backgrounds from all over the country (Brussels, Wallonia and Flanders).

Our primary objectives are: to expose the extreme right, to analyse the conditions allowing neo-fascism to develop, to prove the worthlessness of right-wing extremist ‘alternatives’, to denounce the influence of neo-fascism on mainstream politics, to establish an anti-fascist network for individuals and organisations
